The best thing about Women in Investments is the amount of support and recognition that we receive from some of the most prominent people within the investment management industry. The lunch at Future Fund was inspired by Sam Sicilia, CIO of Hostplus, who encouraged us to think more broadly about the diversity conversation by including men at some of our events. This was an event where we showcased a gender diverse leadership team and also invited men to attend as guests.
We have always appreciated the support of Wendy Norris, deputy CIO (Private Markets) of the Future Fund, at our events. When we emailed her earlier this year to ask if she would be interested in being a speaker at one of our events, she replied with unwavering support. Not only did she put up her hand to host the event but also convinced David George, deputy CIO (Public Markets) to also be part of the conversation. We feel that the partnership between Wendy and David, represents the effectiveness of team collaboration and diversity at the senior management level. (Sue Brake, as the third deputy CIO, recently joined the team but was unable to attend the event).
Wendy together with David George as the two Deputy CIOs discussed the topics of collaboration, leadership and personal growth. What stood out from their talks were:
Following one’s strengths and knowing how to supplement relative weaknesses through team collaboration. And that sometimes it’s as simple as changing up the seating floor plan, to help break down silos.
The importance of recognising diversity at the team level and taking practical steps to acknowledge all voices, not just the loudest ones. That you have to think creatively outside the box to help people feel empowered to speak up.
Having the courage to take risks and to learn from any failures. Thank you to David and Wendy in sharing their personal stories. We loved the quote “If you’re not failing, you’re not taking enough risks”.
We feel grateful that Wendy and David made the time for this event and for the support of the Future Fund for hosting this event.
Women in Investments differentiate our events through fostering an environment of honest conversations centered around leadership and personal stories. We know that this particular event continues to spark bursts of inspiration and discussion among our members.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event before the year ends. So be sure to watch out for our emails!
